The village of Kideksha can be seen in the distance across the fields. We have already mentioned that a royal fortified residence was built here on the bank of the Nerl near the mouth of the Kamenka to guard the river exit from Suzdal, just as Bogolyubovo occupied a strategic position near the confluence of the Nerl and Klyazma. The River Nerl was the region's most important artery. As early as the eleventh century the inhabitants of these parts used to travel down the Nerl when there had been a bad harvest to look for grain in the distant lands of the Volga Bulgars. The decision to build a royal fortress here was justified by recourse to sacred legends, as in the case of Bogolyubovo. It was said that the Russian princes Boris and Gleb, later canonised after being murdered by their brother, had stopped on this spot during their campaigns from Rostov and Murom against Kiev. This connection between the first Russian saints and the Suzdal lands also enhanced the ecclesiastical prestige of the principality, a factor of considerable importance in the struggle for political supremacy between the Russian princes.

The royal residence was bordered on one side by the comparatively high bank of the Nerl and protected on the northwest by earth ramparts with wooden walls. Remains of the ramparts can be seen in some of the nearby homesteads, particularly by the house of the Sostigalov family.
