Unlike the old fortresses of Vladimir and Suzdal whose location was dictated by the existence of natural defences, such as high ground, gullies and rivers, the fortress towns of Yuri Dolgoruky had to be built where the prince commanded. Yuryev-Polskoi was situated on the bank of the River Koloksha near the mouth of its tributary called the River Gza. It is possible that the fortress was protected to the west by a stream or small gully approaching the Koloksha. The fortress was almost circular in plan and was surrounded by high earth ramparts with wooden walls. Their perimeter was about 1,100 yards in circumference and the ramparts, which are well preserved, were 38 feet thick at the base and 22 feet high. This gives us a good idea of the scale on which Yuri Dolgoruky's fortresses were built.
We shall now proceed along the street leading from the town square through the ramparts. Ahead of us is the large brick Trinity Cathedral and on the left the white towers and walls of the royal Monastery of the Archangel Michael founded in the thirteenth century under Svyatoslav and occupying the northeast part of the fortress. The existing buildings belong to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
The west wall contains a section dating back to the seventeenth century and three old towers. This older section has a lower defensive gallery and an upper firing platform with loopholes and slits, which is supported by arches on the inside of the wall. The towers have been greatly altered and have lost their fortified appearance. The rest of the walls were built later.
