Not far from the Church of Our Saviour is the Church of St. George. It was here that the palace of Prince Yuri Dolgoruky stood in the twelfth century. The stone Church of St. George was added in 1157. After the fire of 1778 it was demolished and the stone was used to erect the present building (1783-1784) constructed in provincial Baroque style. Excavation has shown that it was built on the stone walls of the old church which are now completely buried. The original church was almost square in shape, with a single dome supported by four cruciform pillars, flat pilaster strips on the outer walls, and three huge apses. Its socle was not moulded and had a simple, flat surface. With its severe, spare lines and massive proportions the Church of St. George presented a sharp contrast to the Church of Our Saviour nearby. It was very similar to the Church of St. Boris and St. Gleb (1152) in Kideksha, the country residence of Yuri Dolgoruky just outside Suzdal, which we shall examine later.
