Let us now move on to the spot where the twelfth-century Monastery of the Ascension used to stand (at the end of Shchedrin Street). Here, on a high hill which used to be called Ascension Hill, stands the Church of the Ascension built in 1724 and considerably altered by later additions including the bell-tower. Like the Church of St. Nicholas at the Galleys, this church also shows clear evidence of architectural styles prevalent in the seventeenth century, particularly in the kokoshniks*which crowned the walls and the richly carved window surrounds.
